About Daily Etudes

Daily Etudes is a free violin practice journal built by a violinist, for violinists — at dailyetudes.com.

The system is built around one premise: 100 consecutive days of deliberate practice consolidates technique in a way that sporadic sessions never will. The journal gives you the structure to stay accountable — daily logs, lesson notes, a drift-free metronome, repertoire tracking, streak visualization, and an AI coach that reads your actual practice history.

The web app is completely free. Printable PDF and GoodNotes iPad versions are available in Get Journal. Music accessories and books are in Shop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Daily Etudes really free?

Yes. The web app — tracker, daily logs, lesson notes, metronome, AI coach, PDF export — is completely free with no account required. A printable PDF ($7.99) and GoodNotes version ($12.99) are available for purchase.

Will I lose my data if I close the browser?

No — data saves automatically to your browser’s local storage every time you click Save. It persists when you close and reopen the tab. However it’s tied to this specific browser on this device. Export PDF regularly to create a portable backup.

What violin level is this designed for?

The journal works at any level, but it’s calibrated for advancing students — typically Suzuki Books 4–7, working with Wohlfahrt, Sevcik, Hrimaly, and Kreutzer. The warm-up checklist defaults reflect this, but every item is fully editable to match your own routine.

How does the AI coach work?

The AI coach is powered by Claude (Anthropic). When active with an API key on the server, it reads your last 7 practice logs and gives personalized, specific guidance based on what you’ve been working on. Without an API key it runs in demo mode with pre-written coaching responses.

How accurate is the built-in metronome?

The Daily Etudes metronome uses the Web Audio API’s hardware clock to schedule audio events, rather than JavaScript’s setInterval. This makes it significantly more accurate and drift-free compared to software-only metronomes — comparable to a hardware device for most practice purposes.

What happens if I miss a day?

Your current streak resets, but your total logged days and all past entries are preserved. You can start a new 100-day run any time. Many players use a missed day as a moment to recommit rather than a reason to give up.

Can I use this for a different instrument?

Yes. The daily log, lesson notes, and tracker work for any instrument. The warm-up checklist defaults to violin exercises, but every item can be deleted, edited, or replaced via the “+ Add item” button to match your instrument and routine exactly.

Is there a mobile app?

Not yet. Daily Etudes runs in any mobile browser and works offline after the first page load. A native iOS/Android app is planned for a future release.
